Cost of License

What is the cost of a marriage license?

The marriage license fee is $45.00, if you do not plan to marry here at the Courthouse.

The fee to marry here at the Courthouse is $67.00, which includes the license, certificate, record and ceremony. If either party is in the active military, please add an additional $4.00 for additional paper work that is needed per active duty person. The license and ceremony will be done together if you plan on marrying here.

The accepted form of payment is cash.


What type of documents do we need to bring?

Both the bride and groom will need to have their valid driver's license. If they do not have a driver's license, a valid state issued ID card, a certified birth certificate or a Military ID will be required. If you are age 16-17, please see requirements below under age requirements.

In addition to the ID above, a social security card is required. If you have lost your card, you may go to your local social security office to obtain a print out of your card at no charge.

Age Requirement

What is the minimum age a man or woman may marry?

You must be 18 years old or older to marry without parental consent.

What if one or both of us is under 16 years of age?

In Alabama, you will be ineligible to marry regardless of circumstances until you reach 16 with parental consent or 18 without consent.

Residency Requirements

What are the residency requirements for Alabama?

None. You do not have to be a resident of Alabama to obtain a marriage license here. You must however marry within the State of Alabama.

Waiting Period

Is there a waiting period from the application date to the date the license is issued?

No, you will receive your license immediately.

Is there a waiting period from the date the license is issued to the date I am allowed to marry?

No, you can marry immediately after receiving your license.


Are appointments required in order to obtain licenses and ceremonies?

No. Marriages and Licenses are done on a walk in basis. Licenses and ceremonies are preformed Monday though Friday from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm EST.

Blood Tests and Physical Exams

Are blood tests and physical exams required?

No blood test or physical exam is required.

License Expires

How long does a marriage license remain valid once it's been issued?

Your license will expire 30 days from the date it is issued.

Divorced and Widowed Applicants

What if the bride has been divorced?

If the bride was previously married and she was restored a prior name that is not on her valid ID, she will need to bring a certified copy of the divorce decree showing the name that was restored in addition to the other forms of identity required above.

What if the groom has been divorced?

No additional information in regards to the groom is necessary.

How Do I Legally Change My Name?

What's the process of legally changing my last name after marriage?

Following your wedding ceremony, you should come to obtain a marriage certificate and a marriage record, which is a piece of paper proving that you are legally married. (If you are marrying here at the Courthouse this will be included with your total price, those not marrying here must come back and purchase these items.) This certificate will serve as evidence of your marriage, which you'll need when you begin the process of notifying several government agencies about your name change, as well as any non-government institutions that you do business with (i.e.: social security office, banks, employers, credit cards, memberships, etc).

Miscellaneous Questions

Are proxy marriages legal?

No, marriage by proxy is not allowed.

Are same sex marriages legal?

No, same-sex marriages are not allowed.
